Posting here the cure: SOLVED: As suggested in the Steam forums, put Steam into Offline Mode, start Doom Eternal, the game now starts as expected, (I played a little bit because I'm addicted), quit the game, put Steam back into Online Mode, and Doom Eternal should be fine from now on.
